It was a successful weekend for Sahara Force India’s third driver, Jules Bianchi, as he continued his campaign in the World Series by Renault with a brilliant victory at Silverstone.
Having set the pace in free practice, Jules lined up fourth on the grid for the feature race on Saturday afternoon, which proved to be one of the most eventful races of the season.
With rain showers hitting the circuit as the cars left the grid, Jules made a tactical switch to wet tyres early on. It proved the right call as many of the drivers who persevered on slicks slid off the track, causing the race to be stopped.
At the restart, Jules came through the torrential rain showers with a masterful drive to earn his second victory of the season.
“The conditions were really tough today,” said Jules after the race. “The visibility was awful and it wasn’t easy to stay on the track. I just tried to keep my concentration and kept pushing. It’s an important victory in terms of the championship.”
Jules was back on the podium on Sunday morning as he finished third in the second race to consolidate his championship challenge. He now lies third with 125 points just six points behind Series leader Robin Frijns and a single point behind Sam Bird. With six races to go, there’s all to play for…
“The end of the season will be very close,” says Jules. “Between Robin, Sam and me, whoever makes the first mistake will pay a heavy price.”
All three drivers will resume battle in Budapest on 15th and 16th September. In the meantime, Jules will be back in Sahara Force India colours this weekend to carry out his third driver duties at the Belgian Grand Prix. Then it’s straight to Monza, where Jules will be back in the VJM05 during free practice.
Look out for a Q&A with Jules from Spa over the weekend.
