Jules Bianchi continued to shine in the World Series By Renault as he took a brilliant victory at Paul Ricard on Sunday to move to the top of the championship table.
In the damp conditions the 23-year-old Frenchman came out on top following race-long battle with Antonio Felix da Costa to clinch his third victory of the season.
Having started from pole, Jules led the early laps until da Costa managed to get ahead on lap five. But a strategic roll of the dice with an early pit-stop allowed Jules to regain control of the race, eventually taking a comfortable victory.
“I wasn’t quick enough at the start and even though I managed to pick up the pace, it was in the pits that I won the race,” said Jules as he celebrated with his Tech 1 Team.
The victory was made all the sweeter because championship rival, Robin Frijns, could only finish ninth. It means Jules now leads the title race going into the Barcelona finale.
“It’s good to be going to Barcelona in the lead of the championship. We know how reliable Robin Frijns is and he’ll fight all the way to the end. Also, we can never count out Sam Bird. The stakes are high but I can’t let that get to me.”
Jules heads to the Barcelona double-header in three weeks’ time with a five-point lead over Frijns. Bird is 24 adrift with 50 points still available.
The stage is set for a thrilling climax to the Series.
